About The Breed

The Devon Rex is a naturally occurring breed of cat and was first discovered in Devonshire England in the 1950's.  The breed is said to have inspired the alien in the movie E.T.

The Devon Rex or DRX, is a people cat!  They are dog like in personality and form strong bonds with their family.  They want to be where you are, so, in other words, you will never go to the bathroom alone again....or in any room for that matter.  They are gregarious,  social and intelligent.   Typically they greet all visitors of the house, and don't shy away.  They can learn tricks, come when called, and will greet you at the door with just as much enthusiasm as any Canine companion.  Kittens are playful, cuddly, sweet and even more playful!

Devon Rexes are considered hypoallergenic, meaning while they are not "allergy free", they produce lower allergic reactions in people.  My husband grew up with numerous Domestic short hair and long hair cats, and he was allergic.  We got our first Devon Rex and his allergies didn't flare at all.  Their short coats, minimal shedding and lower grooming all help to keep the Fel D1 allergen from spreading around the house and on humans.  Female cats and neutered males produce the least amount of Fel D1, so it is important to neuter and spay your pets after the 6-8 month mark.

The curly coat of the Devon Rex can be extremely curly, loose curls, wavy and so short that the cost appears straight in some places.  Their necks, bellies, and inner thighs can be completely naked and they do come in long hair as well as short hair, and almost every length in between.

Babies will lose their coats at different times and some may lose ALL the hair on their torso and look Sphynx-like.  The baby you fell in love with in pictures may go home very, very odd looking.  Don't be disheartened.  Many times, these babies will regrow the coats they were born with, although it can take 2 years, so patience is required.  Genetics plays a role in coats, if parents and grandparents have good coats, chances are your baby will too!
